Soul Café -“The Theology of J.R.R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis”
April 19, 2022 @ 10:00 am
“The Theology of J.R.R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis” will be presented by Sandy Long at the monthly gathering of Soul Café on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Wyomissing Restaurant, 1245 Penn Avenue, Wyomissing. There is no charge and all are welcome.
Both C. S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were members of a group called “The Inklings.” This group met twice a week from the early 1930s until the late 1940s in Oxford, England. The three most noteworthy members were Lewis, Tolkien and Charles Williams. It was in these meetings that they read their works in progress and had lively discussions about their writings – both fantasy and theology. While Tolkien did not publish theological works, he was a devout Christian and his association and debates with C. S. Lewis helped to turn Lewis from an atheist into a Christian. While the focus will be on Lewis and Tolkien, Charles Williams will be referred to and a few other writers of their time.
Sandy Long is well acquainted with the theology of Lewis and has attended a C.S. Lewis seminar in 1978. She has been reading books by Lewis, Tolkien and Charles Williams since the early 1970s.
