Theology with a Twist: The Inklings: Faith and Fantasy in an English Pub

November 13, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Rev. Dr. Craig Atwood
The Inklings: Faith and Fantasy in an English Pub

We will be discussing the Inklings, a group of English writers and scholars who met regularly at the Eagle and Child Pub in Oxford to discuss literature, philosophy, God, and modern life. The most famous of the Inklings were C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, Christian scholars who used fantasy literature to talk about virtue and faith. We will focus on C. S. Lewis and his Chronicles of Narnia that present basic Christian teaching through children’s stories and mythology.

Rev Dr Awtood is the Charles D Couch Chair of Moravian Theology and Director of The Center for Moravian Studies at Moravian Seminary.  Atwood is best known for his books Community of the Cross: Moravian Piety in Colonial Bethlehem (Penn State, 2004) and Theology of the Czech Brethren from Hus to Comenius (Penn State, 2009). He is also the author of over fifty academic articles, chapters in books, encyclopedia articles, book reviews, and church publications. Atwood has given lectures at the Universities of Heidelberg and Jena in Germany, to Moravian groups in Cuba, Suriname, Wisconsin, and Alberta. He has recently traveled to Morocco, Tanzania, and South Africa. He also appears in two documentary films, one about Count Zinzendorf and the other about the missionary David Zeisberger. He holds a Ph.D., Princeton Theological Seminary, M.Div., Moravian Theological Seminary, and B.A., University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
