Modern American Christianity is as tribal as ever. The two big boxes into which most Americans try to fit, and sometimes force, their faith are “conservative” and “progressive.” Like any labels, these are both defining and restrictive. What might be possible if the church returned to the big tent philosophy of both/and, determined to be a church of Spirit and Truth?

Reverend Cean James is the founding pastor of Grace Christian Fellowship UCC in Southwest Philadelphia and Mt. Airy.  GCF is a welcoming church community that values “making room at the cross for everyone!” GCF is that rare combination of social justice advocate and Pentecostal fire!  In just 13 years of organization, the Lord has blessed GCF to grow to over 600 members.

Rev. James has degrees from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in biology and a MDiv from the Lutheran Theological Seminary of Philadelphia. He is currently a dissertation phase Doctoral candidate at Lancaster Theological Seminary.

Pastor James also serves as Associate Conference Minister of Congregational Development at PSEC, working with the churches on renewal, vitality, growth, and planting new ministries. As well as Director of the CityLights Network, a capacity building nonprofit in Southwest Philadelphia.
