Narrative Spirituality: Storytelling as a Spiritual Practice
Dr. Allan Kramer-Moyer
Allan Kramer-Moyer, D. Min., is a retired UCC pastor, chaplain, and clinical pastoral educator. His last full time ministry was Director of Pastoral Care and Clinical Pastoral Education at Phoebe Ministries from 1996-2011. He first discovered the power of storytelling making up bedtime stories with his children, and used storytelling as a significant part of his preaching ministry. As a chaplain, he learned to invite patients and nursing home residents to tell their stories through a process of life review. As an educator, he learned to invite pastoral students to tell their stories to better understand their call to ministry. He has learned that stories stir our memories, evoke our feelings, deliver us from meaningless, and ultimately, bring us into the presence of the divine. He will share with us some of the stories that have nourished his spiritual development, as well as some of the stories he has written during significant times in his life.
