Spirit on Tap: The Reposturing of a People
April 24, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
“The Reposturing of a People”
Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 50th Anniversary of His Death
Shayna J. Watson
Inspired by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “I’ve been to the Mountain Top” Speech given on April 3, 1968, the day before his assassination. King said, “If I had sneezed (Yes), I wouldn’t have been around here in 1962, when Negroes in Albany, Georgia, decided to straighten their backs up. And whenever men and women straighten their backs up, they are going somewhere, because a man can’t ride your back unless it is bent.” Shayna examines “back-bending” as symbolic of disproportionate power experienced by individuals and groups in our society. The goal is to straighten our backs or “reposture” ourselves in order to “go somewhere.”
Shayna J. Watson, community activist, chaplain, and postulant for Holy Orders in the Episcopal Church, currently attends Virginia Theological Seminary. She is a Board Certified Chaplain through APC and is the creator of “ΘeoCon: Where Theology Meets Pop Culture,” an comic-con style event that explores themes of theology and morality in comic books, graphic novels, and science-fiction(sci-fi) films through use of panel discussions, exhibits, and cosplay.
