As a follow-up to last month’s discussion on “Is Religion Necessary?” Craig Bennett will lead us in talking about “If not religion… what?” Religion has traditionally offered human societies a foundation for community, moral and ethical guidelines, and a basic set of values. Over the last several decades, however, the presence of religion’s influence in American life has been steadily on the wane. If religion should effectively disappear as the only agency in Western society that actively promotes virtues such as honesty, kindness, compassion, and forgiveness, what is there that could take its place? Should anything take its place? Or should we just forget the whole business and forge ahead without it?
