SUMMARY:Are you being called to ministry? The conversation continues.
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever had the experience of leading worship and felt that you were called to do more of it? Has anyone ever said to you that you should think about being a pastor? Discussions around these questions and what it means to be “called” were part of a conversation that began this summer. That conversation continues. You need not have attended the first session to join this one. We will hear more brief stories of people who have answered the call to serve the church in this specific way and reflect on what we’ve discerned since the first session. \nRevs. Kevin McLemore and Bill Worley facilitate the conversation. \nTo register\, click here.

SUMMARY:Advanced Boundary Training: Boundaries for Part-time Pastors
DESCRIPTION:Through a mixture of presentations\, case studies\, and discussion\, Rev. Kevin McLemore will lead a training on the particular boundaries for pastors who are serving a congregation on a part-time basis. Issues around time management and time limitations\, keeping to the tasks outlined in a call agreement\, and how to set those boundaries earlier (and sometimes later) in the ministry\, will be discussed. Whether you are currently serving on a part-time basis or think you may do so at some point in the future\, this workshop will be a useful resource for managing the challenges of serving a congregation in a part-time capacity. \nFacilitator: Rev. Kevin J. McLemore \nIF YOU CANNOT MAKE THIS TIME SLOT\, we are offering an option to “view the recording of the event on your own time and complete a one page synopsis of what you viewed”. A page with specific question(s) will be emailed to you with the recording link. This option is available in the ticket section. \nTo register\, click here.

SUMMARY:2024 Boundary Training by the Lehigh Presbytery - 2 day event/ 3 hrs each day

Following the first session\, participants are asked to engage in a bit of reflection work in preparation for the second session. This online boundaries training will be conducted via secure Zoom video conferencing \nLimit is 40 people per class \nZoom link and workbook will be emailed to all participants 1 week prior to the scheduled training. \nTo register\, click here. \n\n$50.00 for PCUSA / $65.00 for non-PCUSA participants \nOther classes will be offered:\nMay 7/8 from 1PM-4PM\nOctober 15/16 from 10AM-1PM

SUMMARY:Book Study Begins: The Sunflower: On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness
DESCRIPTION:Book Study: The Sunflower: On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness by Simon Wiesenthal. \nRequirements: Purchase of the book and pre-registration.\nContinuing Education credits are offered to those clergy (3.75 hours for attendance across all three meetings)\nLaypersons are welcome to join the book study.\nDates: February 13\, 20 and 27 (Three Tuesday nights via ZOOM.)\nTimes: 7:00 – 8:15 pm\nCost: Free \nFrom the book’s description: “While imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp\, Simon Wiesenthal was taken one day from his work detail to the bedside of a dying member of the SS. Haunted by the crimes in which he had participated\, the soldier wanted to confess to – and obtain absolution from – a Jew. Faced with the choice between compassion and justice\, silence and truth\, Wiesenthal said nothing. But even years after the war had ended\, he wondered: Had he done the right thing? What would you have done in his place? In this important book\, fifty-three distinguished men and women respond to Wiesenthal’s questions. They are theologians\, political leaders\, writers\, jurists\, psychiatrists\, human rights activists\, Holocaust survivors\, and victims of attempted genocide in Bosnia\, Cambodia\, China\, and Tibet. Their responses\, as varied as their experiences of the world\, remind us that Wiesenthal’s questions are not limited to events of the past. Often surprising and always thought-provoking\, The Sunflower will challenge you to define your beliefs about justice\, compassion\, and human responsibility.” \nLed by the Rev. Kevin McLemore\, the Associate Conference Minister for Search and Call\, this book study for lay and clergy will read The Sunflower and discuss Wiesenthal’s question of whether he did the right thing by keeping his silence. As Christians\, we are commanded by Jesus to forgive “seventy times seventy” but this book explores the nature of forgiveness itself\, and if there are some acts that simply unforgivable for humans to forgive. Join us for a rich discussion over three Tuesday evenings in February. \nTo register\, click here.

SUMMARY:Discussion on "Exploring the Pandemic Impact on Congregations"
DESCRIPTION:Whole libraries could be filled with books about the healing power of the holy. Some books are filled with miraculous stories\, others with healthy skepticism. The social sciences haven’t taken a conclusive position on the veracity of Jesus’ healings (that I am aware of) but there is general consensus that religious participation lends itself to overall health and well-being. Regular worship is correlated with less depression\, greater social support\, greater life satisfaction\, more charitable giving\, more volunteering\, and greater civic engagement among other positive effects. But what effect does the act of leading worship and a religious community have on its leaders particularly clergy and their capacity to be agents of holy healing? \nThat question was taken up by the Hartford Institute for Religion Research’s project called “Exploring the Pandemic Impact on Congregations.” (Find that link by clicking here.) In general\, the Hartford study found that\, “clergy over all look quite mentally and emotionally healthy.” Among the things that contribute to that—healthy relationships between and among members and pastor(s)\, and the level of vitality and adaptability of a congregation. No surprise there. \nBut the study also found that “Over the past few years\, we have seen an increasing number of clergy report being burnt out and having thoughts of wanting to leave [ministry].” More than half of religious leaders surveyed (1\,700) seriously considered leaving pastoral ministry at least once in the last three years. Among the things that contribute to clergy burnout and/or departure—congregational resistance to meet new challenges\, diminished energy\, and (primarily) the presence of conflict. \nI am very concerned for our colleagues in ministry who have shared some of their struggles with me and for the church and its serious shortage of mature\, capable\, and committed clergy and clergy candidates. \nThus I invite you to read the study and join clergy colleagues in conversation. \nRev.
