SUMMARY:What to do if ICE comes to your congregation
DESCRIPTION:Workshop: What to do if ICE comes to your congregation:\nGet Prepared\, Get Organized \nFor free registration and the zoom link\, click here. \nA recent policy change that offers the Department of Homeland Security allowing greater leeway for immigration enforcement in “sensitive locations\,” including houses of worship has rightly stirred the ire of religious communities around the county and in our Conference. Our UCC tradition affirms that God’s presence is not limited to any one place\, yet we also recognize the power of setting apart sacred spaces for worship\, reflection\, and action. A consecrated church space is not just a building—it is a sovereign space where God’s presence is acknowledged\, where Christ is proclaimed\, and where the Spirit moves freely among God’s people. It is a place where heaven and earth meet. \nSeveral of our Conference congregations are deeply engaged in immigration work. All of our congregations have a holy responsibility to protect the sovereign sanctity of their sacred places. \nAs the Trump Administration rescinds the sensitive locations memo\, which blocked ICE from entering congregations\, and ICE escalates its enforcement\, congregations need to be informed\, connected and ready. \nNew Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia will be holding a workshop to prepare your congregation that will cover: \n\nUpdates about the memo and ICE activity\nWhat to do if ICE comes to your congregation\, is outside\, or tries to enter\, and what are your rights\nPrepare a plan with staff and members\nPrevention steps – preparing your space\, putting up signs\, talking with staff and leaders\nTactics of noncooperation – grounded in our faith values to love our enemies\, we will explore tactics of nonviolence\n\nWho this is for: \n\nCongregations with immigrant members.\nLeadership in the congregation – clergy\, religious and lay who will be part of putting a plan together or implementing the plan. We have a limit of 4 people per congregation.

SUMMARY:1st day of Epiphany Book Club: Afro-Christian Convention: The Fifth Stream of the UCC
DESCRIPTION:Epiphany Book Club from the Zachariah Walker Racial Justice Initiative!\nFacilitated by: Rev. Cean James and Rev. Dr. Steve Ohnsman \nAfro-Christian Convention: The Fifth Stream of the United Church of Christ\, Yvonne V. Delk ed. \nRequirements: Purchase of the book and pre-registration AND read through the book’s introduction.\nLink to book on Pilgrim Press. \nLaypersons are welcome to join the book study. \nDates: January 21 – February 25th \nTimes: 1:00 – 2:00 pm on Zoom \nCost: Free \nTuesdays from January 21 thru February 25 \nTO REGISTER\, click here. \nA Study of the Afro-Christian Convention \nThe holy stream of African spirituality that flowed across the Atlantic Ocean\, up into the tidewaters of Virginia in 1619\, the same stream that overflowed into the worship and work of the United Church of Christ\, is celebrated and given its long-overdue place in the canon of UCC history. \nThe story of the Afro-Christian Convention is the story of faith\, survival\, and empowerment in the hostile environment of racism. From 1892 to the 1960s\, the Afro-Christian Convention was composed of 150 churches and 25\,000 members\, located primarily in North Carolina and Virginia. \nIn June 1957\, when the founding/merging leaders of the new United Church of Christ processed through Cleveland\, representation of the Afro-Christian Convention churches was folded into the representation of the Convention of the South—a 1950s initiative of the Congregational Christian denomination to fold Black churches of the South into a single conference. \nBut the spirit\, worldview\, worship\, and impact of Afro-Christian Convention churches are not appropriately represented under the banner of the Congregational stream of UCC history\, a stream informed predominantly by white perspective. The Afro-Christian Convention\, born from the wellspring of independent Black churches with deep African rootedness\, is rightly understood—and at last shared—as a unique stream.

SUMMARY:The Importance of Saying "Thank you": Establishing a System for your Church
DESCRIPTION:The Importance of Saying Thank You: Establishing a System for Your Church \nDoes your congregation have a regular plan for thanking your members and donors? If you said no\, don’t worry\, you’re not alone! If you said yes\, we want to hear from you! According to the Lewis Center for Church Leadership\, “Saying thank you promptly and regularly is one of the simplest and most effective things a congregation can do to reinforce good stewardship and enhance giving. When people are thanked regularly\, they feel appreciated\, valued\, and needed — which makes them more likely to support ministry with their time\, talents\, and financial support. To accomplish this\, churches need a thank you system that is personal\, prompt\, and planned.” Join us for our first-ever PSEC Generosity Virtual Coffee Hour to discuss this important topic! \nFor a free registration\, click here.

SUMMARY:Advanced Boundary Training: Pastoring While Experiencing Your Own Physical\, Emotional\, and Spiritual Challenges
DESCRIPTION:In this three-hour Advanced Boundary Training on ZOOM\, the issues around pastoring to others while experiencing your own challenges will be explored. When clergy are experiencing a crisis themselves\, how can they remain pastorally effective while also tending to their own needs? How much should one share with your congregation about your own physical\, emotional\, and spiritual challenges? How does one set up healthy boundaries with a congregation\, while also acknowledging their desire to care for you? These issues and others will be discussed in this training with a mixture of teaching\, discussion\, and case studies. \nThe following two GPC Ministers  are conducting the this Boundary Training: \nDonna Mast is an Eastern Mennonite Seminary graduate with a double major in Pastoral Care and Counseling and Christian Spiritual Formation. Since graduation\, she has served as a pastor\, spiritual director\, conference minister\, and most recently a Gestalt Pastoral Care minister. Presently\, she lives in Goshen\, Indiana where she serves as lead pastor at Silverwood Mennonite Church.  She is married to Conrad and together they have three adult daughters and 2 grandsons. \nBetty Voigt is an Ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA).Her Presbytery has validated her call to two specialized ministries:\nSpiritual Direction and Gestalt Pastoral Care Ministry \nTo register\, click here.
