UCC and ELCA – Working together in new ways…

1460Salem (Hetzel’s) UCC is celebrating its 230th anniversary as we honor our forebearers who founded this house of worship. At the same time, we look forward to the ways that God is working here. We are two separate (UCC and ELCA) distinct congregations that have found oneness in Jesus Christ. We are an example of ecumenism in action, preserving both traditions.

We have combined VBS, God’s Gang (our youth group), Sunday School and Adult Choir. We are active during the year with choir cantatas, Bible Study, and United Church Women. God’s Gang will return on June 30, 2013 from their yearly trip to Creation Music Festival. They are an active group that sends fruit baskets at Thanksgiving and Easter to our elderly and shut-ins. They yearly put on a dinner theater play and twice a year a church-wide talent show.

1460-3The most exciting ministry started this year is our Sunday evening contemporary praise and prayer service. This lay-led service was an outgrowth of a few people who felt moved to explore other ways of ministering to people who are not involved in the Sunday morning worship. High school students, senior citizens and all ages in between have shared the preaching duties as they reach out to people who share in the worship and praise of God.

Hetzel’s has a long history and is looking forward to all that can happen in the future.
