Serving the communities of Reading and Berks County
At Calvary UCC in Reading, PA, our magnificent structure and inspiring worship is just the beginning of who we are. We just began our second 125 years with new vigor and commitment to feeding, housing, and caring for the lost and oppressed. Our unique ministry is also focused on serving as a ministry hub for 5 other congregations and several community ministries. We became the first ONA congregation for 40 miles in every direction in 2014, and we offer many ministries for our diverse community. We are actively involved in Family Promise, the Reading Berks Conference of Churches, the Centre Park Historic District, Berks Women in Crisis, and many more local and global ministries.
Our pastor, Steve Ohnsman, is in his 18th year as our 8th pastor. Along with our own emergency Food Cupboard, we provide funding through the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund, assisting local residents with rent and utilities. We also have a relationship with a local pharmacy to provide medicine for struggling families. Calvary supports a literacy program called Ready.Set.READ!, an initiative of the Berks County United Way, and other outreach programs in the city of Reading. The congregation has also developed a partnership with the Religious Studies Department at Albright College to bring well known theologians and authors into the community. Our mission is the same as it was in 1890 – to serve Christ where people have needs.
