Rev Barbara K Peronteau
A Trans Woman and Her Faith Journey
From famous celebrities coming out, to “bathroom bills’, to acceptance by institutions such as the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, transgender folks have been in the news a lot lately. Even though not one person has ever been molested in a bathroom by a trans person, conservative religious people and right wing politicians want to vilify us. Progressive people of faith and liberal politicians want to include, protect our civil rights, and welcome trans people. But what I have found, even among people who welcome us, is most people do not understand who we are. By weaving her story with the latest professional understandings, Rev. Peronteau will share her version of “Trans 101” so that you might have a better understanding of who trans people truly are.
Barbara graduated from Lynchburg College and from Union Theological Seminary in VA. She served several congregations and currently is an Interfaith Chaplain Resident at Reading Hospital. Barbara speaks widely about being transgender, her Christian faith, and the need for inclusion and equal rights for the LGBTQ community. The institution of the Transgender Day of Remembrance in Reading is an achievement she is most proud of. Recently Barbara was featured in a short video, entitled “The Girl Wants Out”, by the Berks Story Project.

Refresh, Renew, Rethink with Marjory Zoet Bankson
As educators we are charged with keeping up with trends, watching for changes in church attendance, editing curriculum that doesn’t quite fit, planning creative and inspiring ministry events, delivering sermons, chancel steps talks, and words of encouragement. We support our ministers, co-workers, parishioners and each other. We have families that need us, love us, and vie for our time. We see value in knowing a God whose grace stops us dead in our tracks at times and frankly, it can wear us out.
After several years of inspiring workshops and hands on education we will turn our retreat time toward spiritual renewal and personal refreshment. We will also set aside time to discuss the current challenges of the day like attendance, internet resources, talking to families, and brainstorming themes.
