Spreading God’s Word Through Preaching, Teaching, and Example
- to place God first in our lives
- to share in God’s love and grace through worship
- to grow and be strengthened through prayer and scriptural studies
- to accept the joy and cost of discipleship, following Christ’s example
- to be good stewards of who we are and what God has given us, while reaching out to those beyond ourselves
- to be instruments of peace
Since 1736, Bern Reformed United Church of Christ has sought to spread God’s word through preaching, teaching, and example. The congregation is always collecting donations for the New Journey Soup Kitchen, and once a month cooks and delivers a full dinner for New Journey. The church also holds its annual Strawberry and Peach festivals in the grove across from the church.
The original church was founded in 1736 and was among the first thirty German Reformed Congregations established in Pennsylvania. Near the end of the church’s first century of existence, it was joined by a Lutheran congregation seeking a place to worship. It remained a union church until 1998 when the Lutheran congregation built their own sanctuary to continue its ministry as an individual church.
In 2010, the sanctuary was completely renovated and new electrical, heating, and air conditioning systems were installed, bringing the building to its current appearance. A capital campaign is under way for future renovations and improvements.
During its interim ministry period of 2012 and 2013, Bern Church is actively engaged in a process of healing and re-imaging God’s dreams for its future mission and ministry.
With the arrival of our new Pastor, who has revitalized several Churches, we will be working together use the skills and gifts of the members of Bern Church to create a vision for ministry and mission to our community, that God’s love might flow through the members of Bern to serve our sisters and brothers in sharing God’s light.
